Start with the work triangle.
If you have never heard this phrase before, it’s a term kitchen designers use to describe the path you take through your kitchen while you are cooking. The three points of the triangle are your fridge, stove, and sink. The key to any effective kitchen design is to keep the work triangle clear. The most common obstruction to the work triangle is a kitchen island. In a large kitchen, it’s not usually a problem. The island can sit inside the triangle and won’t block the path. In a smaller kitchen, you should try to place an island outside the work triangle if you want to include one in your design.
Don’t skimp on counter space.
One of the most common complaints people have about their current kitchen is that there isn’t enough counter space. When remodeling your kitchen, you should try to incorporate as much counter space as you can into the design. Think about what appliances will have to live on the counter, like the toaster oven or coffeemaker, and how much available space you want for cooking and working.
Go for ceiling-high cabinets.
It’s true of all kitchen designs: the more storage space, the better. There is only so much horizontal space in your kitchen, so don’t waste any vertical space. And cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling don’t only give you more storage space. In a small kitchen, they draw the eye upwards and make the room look bigger.
